The widest and detailed treatment of the Neapolitan Mastiff in the world-wide survey of the specialized publishing, thanks to a very exhaustive and technically unexceptionable study. More than three hundred among beauty (show) champions, reproducers and others significant subjects, as for breed selection, are described in this publication together with their morphologic-functional characteristics, both in Italy and in the rest of the world. The Fci/Enci official breed standard in force is deeply examined and the book also includes remarks on each of the previous official editions. Suggestions concerning the historical breed standard proposals, planned by the “breed fathers” (Ruggero Soldati and Piero Scanziani) are analysed. Remarks on standards and the opinions and advice that traditional breeders, specialist judges and others Neapolitan Mastiff-lovers (mastinari) experts have expressed on the monographic and encyclopaedic books published in Italy have been examined. The publication, based on typicalness and functionality, strengthens the importance of zootechnical beauty and includes the innovative proposals of a synthetic morphologic breed standard suggested to single out the basic features of this breed more easily. Moreover, it contains an aptitude test and its working breed standard. The publication deals with the role of the Neapolitan Mastiff as watchdog, both in towns and in the country and comes to the scientific conception of the typology of the ideal breed prototype by showing some representative models chosen looking throughout the breeding chronology. This book, therefore, is unique of its kind in the universal monographic dog literature of any breed. The inclination towards study of the author and his initiative as an publisher have, as a matter of fact, filled a gap. This book offers, for the first time, as such a work has been published nowhere before, a useful instrument to those who wish to study in depth the typological and genetic pillars of the Neapolitan Mastiff from the zootechnical point of view.

The publication was presented in world preview at the meeting of the 14th A.T.I.Ma.Na. (Neapolitan Mastiff International Technical Association) Championship on 2nd October 2004 in Mexico.
